Welcome to Smart Growth Anacortes.
Smart Growth Anacortes is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping residents better understand the city planning, development, and growth policies that shape our community. By sharing documents, commentary, and resources, we hope to make it easier for citizens to stay informed and participate thoughtfully in local decision-making.
In December 2025, the City of Anacortes approved an updated Comprehensive Plan. After reviewing the plan and participating in the public process, we believe several aspects deserve closer public discussion. Over the past several months, we have shared comments and questions regarding the plan and have now filed four appeals that will be reviewed this year by the Growth Management Hearings Board.
This website was created to share information and encourage community engagement. Public participation plays an important role in planning decisions, and Washington’s Open Public Meetings Act highlights the importance of ongoing public involvement when developing policies such as a Comprehensive Plan. We believe there are opportunities to improve how information and meeting records are shared with the public so that citizens can more easily follow the process.
