Wow, I just discovered your organization at the Saturday Farmers’ Market. I am SO glad you exist. I try to follow all of the meetings of the city, but I truly don’t understand any of it.
My interests are in preserving the shorelines in a safe, environmental way. ++I’m concerned about the MJB properties and what they are doing like luring the city into paying for restrooms, streets, streetlights, proper drainage systems, parking and all that is affected when developing an area of this precious land. Of course, that land would be a perfect park for all to enjoy, but money talks. The City keeps saying how great development is for money. Nope, our authentic darling little town is far more valuable than any income the City wants. ++I’m concerned why they feel they need to build an 8 million dollar event center that seats 400 people?! Once all of the buildings they’re talking about building are in, there won’t be any place for the marina folks and others to park. And how are we going to draw in 400 people to fill those seats? They claim, ‘we build and they will come’ is the mantra the Mayor repeats. Nope. what can we offer to attract that many people in an out of way town? People going for entertainment or whatever have Seattle and all of its surrounding cities closer for the big cities of people to easily attend, not way out here. And who ends up paying for it? Property tax payers! Folks who have lived here most of their life can’t afford to live in their hometown anymore. That is not fair for long time residences or new comers who would love to live here but can’t afford it.++Then the TT trail they want to extend will destroy the natural environment along the shores west of town.++And the latest wasteful idea of recreating downtown into a sort of Disneyland of bright colors, weird flat corners, lots of signs and lights and al the other stuff the Downtown Alliance is proposing to ruin the historic beauty of our little Old Downtown. People come for that, not for a makeover of a modern circus atmosphere. The makeover of the streets and curbs will be a traffic nightmare! They also propose signage with painted trails on the street to lead visitors to other places besides downtown. Why would out of town visitors want to go to our library? They don’t have a library card here cause they live elsewhere so that sure doesn’t make sense either. ++ The latest money wasting project was the traffic lights outside of Safeway and repaving, re-striping to make that whole intersection into a serious mess of traffic, bumps and fewer lanes for those who want to turn into Safeway. Okay, so I have a few bees in my bonnet. But we move here and people come here to visit for the small town historic charm. Let’s not destroy that. Good luck with your new organization, i wish you much success! *deb*
